Community Service

From the Social/Emotional Team

We have been busy!

All Thames students have participated in a Community Service Project this year.  Other projects included collecting data for Save the Sound; and supporting our local homeless shelter's annual fundraiser.  Whatever the job, our students put forth their best effort, and we applaud them!

Thames at Mitchell College is dedicated to the mission of community service and service learning over the last two years. This intentional element is part of our mission to give back to the community, to make meaningful connections, and be participants in our thriving New England city. Over the last two years, Karen D’Agostino and Teresa Benner have dedicated themselves to making connections with a variety of organizations including environmental clean-up organizations, Ukrainian Refugee Fundraising with Sunflower sales, Out of the Darkness walk for mental health initiatives, Save the Sound beach cleanup, and other community events.

This year's beach cleanup connected with Save the Sound for the annual International Coastal Cleanup. Students were tasked with reporting data on the type of trash that was collected on the shore. Students were provided background and information about how marine life is affected by contaminants. This semester, students volunteered at the Don't Pass the Guitar event that raised funds for the Homeless Hospitality Center. It was held at the Hygienic Art Park in downtown New London. The Thames at Mitchell students also participated in the Halloween "Trunk or Treat" event sponsored by the City of New London and the Downtown New London Association. Students decorated the waterfront and passed out candy. On January 18, 2023, 18 Thames students volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity worksite in Norwich, CT.  Habitat crew supervisors provided detailed instruction on painting and sheet-rocking.  Half of the students took up brushes and rollers to coat the entire interior of one home, while the other half measured and drilled.
